Harry: #AIDS2016 & #HeadsTogether

Well, Harry is becoming our favorite boy on this space, but I think we have good reasons for this right?

As said earlier, the younger son of the Prince of Wales was last week in Africa at the International AIDS Conference held in Durban in South Africa.

Harry, as co-founder and patron of Sentebale, a charity in Lesotho, spoke about the importance of the younger generations be an active and important part in the fight against HIV / AIDS and promoting prevention.

Through his educational work with children and young people from Lesotho, Harry is aware of the importance of education and motivation has on younger generations in the fight against HIV / AIDS, and how these tools can help fight stigma and prejudice .

"But just imagine what would happen if in places like Lesotho and throughout Africa, children were given the tools to protect their health, to speak out against stigma and discrimination, and to support their friends and family. In helping young people to fight HIV we would not just be ending this epidemic, we would change the direction of history for an entire generation."

Harry also mentioned the central importance of mental health in this fight, and gave the example of the beginning of his work with Sentebale:

"We knew that just focusing on the physical effects of the disease wasn’t enough - a child with unaddressed depression or traumatic stress from bereavement, poverty, and discrimination is not a child who is likely to stick with their treatment programme."

Harry shared the conference stage with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, the other co-founder of Sentebale, and Sir Elton John, an active voice in the fight against HIV / AIDS, through Elton John AIDS Foundation.
Harry, after being tested for HIV live days earlier, he spoke of the importance of being tested:

"It is time for us to step up to make sure no young person feels any shame in asking for an HIV test."

The Prince did not forget the work of his mother, the Princess of Wales, in this same area of intervention and fighting against stigma and called for the advances that have been made since then until now:

"When my mother held the hand of a man dying of AIDS in an East London hospital, no one would have imagined that just over a quarter of a century later treatment would exist that could see HIV-positive people live full, healthy, loving lives."

But Harry called attention for,  although all the advances made in the treatment, it is necessary to bring back the issue to the headlines:
"But we now face a new risk - the risk of complacency. As people with HIV live longer, AIDS is a topic that has drifted from the headlines. And with that drift of attention, we risk a real drift of funding and of action to beat the virus. We cannot lose a sense of urgency, because despite all the progress we have made, HIV remains among the most pressing and urgent of global challenges."

At the end of the conference, Harry and Elton John were interviewed by two young girls, Yolanda and Beatrice, from the Children Radio Foundation

The interview was broadcast live on the official Facebook of the British Royal Family.

But Harry's work did not stop there. Yesterday it was reported that the 5th in line of succession to the throne was the host of an Heads Together barbecue  on the 14th of July, which brought together several renowned names in sports and where the theme was mental health.

Heads Together is a campaign launched by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and by Prince Harry in partnership with various charitable organizations with the aim of putting an end to the stigma that still surrounds mental health.

In this gathering, several sports stars were invited, including Rio Ferdinand, Dame Kelly Holmes, Victoria Pendleton, Jonathan Trott and Iwan Thomas. who shared their very complicated professional and personal situations and who helped them in the process.

During this sharing of experiences, in conversation with Rio Ferdinand, who lost his wife last year, Harry confessed he regrets not having spoken about the death of his mother earlier.

Harry in conversation for the BBC during the event left some key ideas on this initiative:

“It is OK to suffer, but as long as you talk about it. It is not a weakness. Weakness is having a problem and not recognising it and not solving that problem. A lot of people think if you’ve got a job, if you’ve got financial security, if you’ve got a family, you’ve got a house, all that sort of stuff, everyone seems to think that is all you need and you are absolutely fine to deal with stuff."

We know from experience or situations that we see before us that problems such as depression, anxiety, trauma, do not choose people or social spheres. We also know that many people prefer to deal with their problems in private and for themselfs.

In my experience, one thing is to try to understand what we are feeling, trying to process all that is happening in our lifes in private. Another thing is over time continue not to mention these issues and put a "I'm all fine!" mask.  If we don't talk about it is because we continue to suffer. If we continue to suffer, we need help! Because make no mistakes: all that remains unresolved in our lives, soon or later, will come back to haunt us.

I confess that I have not yet realized the concrete objectives of this campaign, in addition to talk about mental health. William made a similar event with a Breakfast on Father's Day. Now it was time for Harry with a barbecue. Hopefully Kate will host a tea party in the near future, who knows?
