A 14 de Fevereiro de 1981 o Grão-Duque Hereditário do Luxemburgo, Henri, casa com Maria Teresa Mestre. O casal conheceu-se na Universidade em Genebra, onde Maria Teresa estava a estudar Ciências Políticas. Durante o período de universidade é sabido que Maria Teresa se dedicou a várias causas sociais, um interesse que lhe terá sido incutido desde a sua infância pelos seus pais e avós.
On February 14, 1981, the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, Henri, married Maria Theresa Mestre. The couple met at the University in Geneva, where Maria Teresa was studying political science. During the period of university it is known that Maria Teresa was dedicated to various social causes, an interest that she has been instilled since her childhood by her parents and grandparents.
Desconhece-se há quanto tempo o casal se conhecia antes de começarem uma relação amorosa, mas é de conhecimento geral que a relação de ambos se desenvolveu a partir de uma sólida amizade. Segundo se diz, Henri não terá dito imediatamente a Maria Teresa que era o herdeiro do trono do Luxemburgo. Um dia Maria Teresa foi despedir-se dele à estação e encontra-o com uniforme militar e com escolta. Não lhe terá perdoado logo...
It is not known how long the couple had known each other before starting a love relation, but it is common knowledge that their relationship developed from a solid friendship. It is said that Henri did not immediately tell Maria Teresa that he was the heir to the throne of Luxembourg. Ainda assim, e segundo palavras de Maria Teresa "Quanto mais tempo passávamos juntos, mais claro ficava que queríamos passar as nossas vidas juntos". O noivado foi anunciado a 8 de Novembro de 1980, após a conclusão dos estudos de ambos em Genebra.
Still, and in Maria Teresa's words, "The longer we spent together, the clearer it became that we wanted to spend our lives together." The engagement was announced on November 8, 1980, after the conclusion of their studies in Geneva.
A noticia apanhou o povo luxemburguês de surpresa e depressa começaram os rumores (aparentemente fundamentados) que a mãe do noivo, a Grã-Duquesa Josephine-Charlotte era contra a escolha da noiva. Josephine-Charlotte, princesa belga por nascimento, queria uma nora de origem nobre. Bem, de certa forma até teve sorte...A família de Maria Teresa descende do Rei Fernando I de Leão e Castela, Imperador de toda a Espanha no período medieval. Mas parece que isso não foi suficiente, pois a relação menos positiva entre as duas damas do Luxemburgo durou vários anos, provavelmente até à morte de Josephine-Charlotte.
The news caught up with the Luxembourg people by surprise and the rumors (apparently grounded) began that the groom's mother, the Grand Duchess Josephine-Charlotte, was against the his son's choice of bride. Josephine-Charlotte, a Belgian princess by birth, wanted a daughter-in-law of noble birth. Well, in a way she even got lucky... Maria Teresa's family descended from King Fernando I of Leon and Castile, Emperor of all Spain in the medieval period. But it seems that this was not enough, since the less positive relationship between the two ladies of Luxembourg lasted for several years, probably until Josephine-Charlotte's death.
Após Henri ameaçar abdicar dos seus direitos ao trono, o casamento foi aprovado, e após inicialmente se prever um casamento na primavera, o casal optou por uma data mais rápida e casou no Dia de S. Valentim (ao que parece o casal só se apercebeu da coincidência alguns anos depois...).
After Henri threatened to relinquish his rights to the throne, the marriage was approved, and after initially anticipating a marriage in the spring, the couple opted for a faster date and married on Valentine's Day (it seems the couple only realized this coincidence a few years later ...).
O casamento foi dividido em duas partes. A cerimónia civil teve lugar no período da manhã e foi conduzida pelo Presidente da Câmara da cidade do Luxemburgo na presença dos familiares e amigos mais próximos do casal.
The marriage was divided into two parts. The civil ceremony took place in the morning and was conducted by the Mayor of the city of Luxembourg in the presence of the couple's closest family members and friends.
A cerimónia religiosa teve lugar na Catedral Notre Dame. A noiva usou uma criação da casa de moda francesa Balmain. O vestido de mangas compridas, típico dos anos 80, era bastante simples, mas possuía detalhes em pele no decote, punhos e bainha, completamente apropriado a um vestido de noiva de inverno.
The religious ceremony took place at Notre Dame Cathedral. The bride used a creation of the French fashion house Balmain. The long-sleeved dress, typical of the 80's, was quite simple, but had fur details on the neckline, cuffs and hem, completely appropriate to a winter wedding dress.
A cauda tinha cerca de dois metros e estendia-se desde os ombros da noiva (se me perguntarem é sempre daí que uma cauda deve começar!). O véu sensivelmente do mesmo comprimento era adornado com a Tiara de Diamentes do Congo, uma escolha muito popular para as noivas reais luxemburguesas. A completar um simples bouquet de flores.
The train was about two meters long from the bride's shoulders (if you ask me, it's always where a train should start!). The veil of the same length was adorned with the Congo Diamond Tiara, a very popular choice for the royal brides of Luxembourg. To complete a simple bouquet of flowers.
Henri e Maria Teresa formaram um casal muito bonito e feliz. Foi mais uma vitória do amor sobre as convenções e preconceito. Uma união que depressa deu frutos.
Henri and Maria Teresa formed a very beautiful and happy couple. It was another victory of love over convention and prejudice. A union that soon bore fruit.
Pouco depois do casamento, foi anunciada a primeira gravidez da jovem Grã-Duquesa Hereditária do Luxemburgo, e em Novembro de 1991 nasce o Príncipe Guillaume. Seguiriam-se mais 4 filhos. No desempenho das suas funções, Maria Teresa tem estado ligada a várias associações caritativas e empresta a sua voz a grandes causas, como a crise dos refugiados, protecção dos direitos das crianças e luta e prevenção contra o HIV/SIDA.
Shortly after the wedding, the first pregnancy of the young Hereditary Grand Duchess of Luxembourg was announced, and in November of 1991 Prince Guillaume was born. Four more children would follow. In the performance of her duties, Maria Teresa has been linked to various charitable associations and lends her voice to major causes, such as the refugee crisis, protection of children's rights, and HIV / AIDS prevention and control.
