A Dinamarca tem uma nova Guardiã do Reino / Denmark has a new Guardian of the Realm
A Casa Real Dinamarquesa anunciou ontem, num Conselho de Estado na presença da Rainha Margrethe II e do Príncipe da Coroa Frederik, que a Princesa da Coroa Mary foi apontada como potencial guardiã do Reino (i.e. Regente - só achei que Guardiã do Reino era uma expressão muito mais interessante) e, como tal, Mary tem agora lugar no Conselho de Estado. Mary fez o seu juramente ontem no Conselho de Estado.
The Danish Royal House announced yesterday, in a State Council in the presence of Queen Margrethe II and Crown Prince Frederik, that Crown Princess Mary was appointed as potential Guardian of the Realm (ie Regent - I just thought Guardian of the Realm was an expression much more interesting) and as such Mary now has a seat on the Council of State. Mary made her oath yesterday at the State Council.
Ser Regente (ou guardiã do Reino) quer dizer que a Princesa herdeira pode exercer as funções constitucionais de Chefe de Estado na ausência ou em caso de doença da Rainha Margrethe II e do Príncipe da Coroa Frederik. Em 1972, a Rainha Ingrid, mãe da actual Rainha, foi a primeira pessoa, fora da linha de sucessão ao trono, a ser nomeada Guardiã do Reino, alguns meses depois da morte do seu marido, o Rei Frederik IX. Segundo o historiador Trond Norén Isaksen, a própria Rainha Margrethe lhe terá dito que a razão pela qual tal honra ser concedida a Ingrid foi o facto de existirem poucas pessoas elegíveis para serem Regentes na altura, em caso de incapacidade ou ausência do monarca: o marido da Rainha, Henrik, viajava frequentemente com Margrethe, os dois filhos do casal, Frederik e Joachim tinham somente 3 e 4 anos de idade e a Princesa Benedikte, irmã da Rainha, vivia na Alemanha.
To be Regent (or Guardian of the Kingdom) means that the Crown Princess can perform the constitutional functions of Head of State in the absence or in case of illness of both Queen Margrethe II and Crown Prince Frederik. In 1972, Queen Ingrid, mother of the current Queen, was the first person, outside the line of succession to the throne, to be named Kingdom Guardian, a few months after the death of her husband, King Frederik IX. According to historian Trond Norén Isaksen, Queen Margrethe herself has told him that the reason why such an honor was bestowed on Ingrid was that there were few people eligible to be Regents at the time, in case of incapacity or absence of the monarch: The Queen's husband Henrik often traveled with Margrethe, the couple's two sons Frederik and Joachim were only 3 and 4 years old and Princess Benedikte, the Queen's sister, lived in Germany.

Until yesterday, Frederik, Joachim and Benedikte were the Sworn Regents of Denmark. Several aspects may have led to Mary's appointment: With the death of Prince Henrik, it is up to Crown Prince Frederik to accompany his mother on many international trips. Prince Joachim and his family recently moved to France, where the Prince will take a special military course, not sure when he will return to Denmark. And Princess Benedikte, while no longer living 100% of the time in Germany, does not live 100% in Denmark either.
