Bem-vindos a mais um post semanal. Hoje algo bem diferente, mas que seja um verdadeiro abre olhos para muitos. "Nem tudo o que luz é ouro", que é quem como quem diz que não são apenas as nossas Rainhas e Princesas a darem cartas na indústria da moda. E quando falamos em moda sustentável acho que as gerações mais experientes têm muito a ensinar às mais jovens. E quando falamos em Sustentabilidade não poderemos deixar de mencionar JAMAIS o Príncipe de Gales. Na minha opinião o mais bem vestido membro da realeza mundial, logo seguido pelo Príncipe Herdeiro da Dinamarca, Frederik.

Welcome to another weekly post. Today something very different, but that is a real wakeup call for many. "Not everything that lights is gold", meaning that it is not just our Queens and Princesses who are playing cards in the fashion industry. And when we talk about sustainable fashion, I think that the more experienced generations have a lot to teach the younger ones. And when we talk about Sustainability, we cannot stop mentioning the Prince of Wales, NEVER. In my opinion the best-dressed male royal, soon followed by the Crown Prince of Denmark, Frederik.

Um apaixonado defensor da tradição artesanal, Charles fala com o editor-chefe da Vogue britânica sobre o The Modern Artisan, um programa de treinamento co-fundado pela The Prince's Foundation, cujos alunos estão prestes a lançar uma coleção de moda com foco na sustentabilidade.  A entrevista pode ser lida aqui, o que aconselho vivamente que façam. O Príncipe de Gales faz várias confissões, inclusive o facto de em criança os seus sapatos levarem frequentemente solas novas, enquanto servissem, em vez de comprar uns sapatos novos.

Defensor do Meio Ambiente há décadas o Príncipe dá-nos alguns dados do papel da sustentabilidade na indústria da moda no combate às alterações climáticas:

The Prince of Wales makes several confessions, including the fact that as a child his shoes often carry new soles while they fit, instead of buying new shoes.

Defender of the Environment for decades, the Prince has given us some data on the role of sustainability in the fashion industry in combating climate change:

"É absolutamente vital, devido, além de qualquer outra coisa, à quantidade de dinheiro gerada pelo sector da moda - que é agora, o quê, US $ 1,9 triliões a nível global? E prevê-se um aumento até US $ 3,3 triliões até 2030. Ao mesmo tempo, a indústria têxtil contribui com algo como 1,2 biliões de toneladas de gases de efeito estufa, o que horrivelmente - e surpreendentemente - é mais do que todos os setores de aviação e navegação juntos. Portanto, é fundamental que abordemos toda a questão em torno de como produzimos roupas. Muitos dos processos na fabricação de têxteis envolvem produtos químicos tóxicos que prejudicam enormemente o meio ambiente. Depois, há todo o desperdício e o lixo colocado em aterros sanitários, e é por isso que é tão importante se queremos de facto enfrentar esses enormes desafios globais em torno do aquecimento global e das mudanças climáticas. Temos que descarbonizar e melhorar o impacto que temos em termos de poluição no mundo. Há desenvolvimentos interessantes em andamento, como você sabe, em materiais inovadores. Tive uma conversa interessante com Vin e Omi, os duas personagens da moda que conheci num chá para a iniciativa Positive Fashion, que fazem tecidos com urtigas que colherem em Highgrove. Esse é um antigo sistema de uso de urtigas. Mas o problema são sempre os processos envolvidos na fabricação dessas coisas. Como podemos reduzir o impacto que eles têm no meio ambiente e na vida em geral? Essa é a questão crítica aqui."

"It’s absolutely vital, because of, apart from anything else, the amount of money generated by the clothing sector – what is it now, $1.9 trillion globally? And they’re projecting $3.3 trillion by 2030. At the same time, the textile industry contributes something like 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gas, which horrendously – and surprisingly – is more than the entire aviation and shipping sectors. So it is critical that we address the whole issue around how we produce clothes. So many of the processes in textile-making involve toxic chemicals that damage the environment in a huge way. Then there’s all the waste and throwing away of clothes into landfill sites, which is why it matters so much if we’re going to tackle these huge global challenges around global warming and climate change. We have to decarbonise and improve the impact we have in terms of pollution on the world. There are interesting developments going on, as you know, in innovative materials. I had an interesting conversation with Vin & Omi, the two fashion characters I met at a tea for the Positive Fashion initiative, who have been making textiles out of nettles that they collected at Highgrove. That turns out to be an ancient system of using nettles. But the problem always is the processes involved in making these things. How do we reduce the impact they have on the environment and life generally? That’s the critical issue here."

Pouco nos focamos na roupa dos nossos meninos, por acharmos que eles estão sempre vestidos de igual. A verdade é que provavelmente temos razão. Mas numa altura em que se apela tanto ao minimalismo, reutilização, desperdício zero, compras em segunda mão, economia circular e sustentabilidade, penso que é o momento de vermos isso como um exemplo a seguir pelas nossas meninas, e não como algo aborrecido e até desapontante.

We don't focus much on our boys' clothes, because we think they are always dressed the same. The truth is, we are probably right. But at a time when there is so much appeal to minimalism, reuse, zero waste, second-hand shopping, circular economy and sustainability, I think it is time to see this as an example to be followed by our girls, and not as something boring and even disappointing.
