Como disse ontem, a agenda das casas reais diminuiu significativamente à medida que o vírus infectava cada vez mais pessoas pela Europa. Com o agravamento da situação sanitária,os governos de vários países viram-se forçados a tomar atitudes muito severas de forma a evitar a propagação da pandemia do novo coronavírus/COVID-19. Isolamento social, fecho de fronteiras, limitação da circulação de bens e pessoas, foram apenas algumas das medidas que a maioria de nós está a sentir na pele pela primeira vez na nossa vida. Os idosos - um grupo que é particularmente frágil a esta doença - foram talvez aqueles que mais sentiram estas mudanças de comportamento, e em duas fases muito distintas. Primeiro porque eles acham que são imortais (como gostaríamos que fossem!) e não dão valor à sua própria saúde, daí ser muito difícil fazê-los entender que de repente não podem estar com os filhos e netos, não tanto por eles, mas por si mesmos. Em segundo lugar, os idosos que vivem em lares de terceira idade e em unidades de cuidados continuados viram-se agora isolados, impedidos de receber visitas dos seus familiares e amigos. Acredito que a tristeza nesta altura pode ser tão letal quanto o vírus.
As I said yesterday, the royals agenda has decreased significantly as the virus has infected more and more people across Europe. With the worsening health situation, the governments of several countries have been forced to take very severe actions in order to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus / COVID-19 pandemic. Social isolation, closing borders, limiting the movement of goods and people, were just some of the measures that most of us are feeling on our skin for the first time in our lives. The elderly - a group that is particularly fragile to this disease - were perhaps those who most felt these changes of behavior, and in two very distinct ways. First because they think they are immortal (as we would like them to be!) and do not value their own health, so it is very difficult to make them understand that suddenly they cannot be with their children and grandchildren, not so much for them, but for themselves. Secondly, the elderly who live in nursing homes and in long-term care units now find themselves isolated, unable to receive visits from their families and friends. I believe that sadness at this point can be as lethal as the virus.
Durante alguns dias, pouco ou nada soubemos das famílias reais, salvo alguns comunicados oficiais sobre o cancelamento de eventos. Aos poucos também eles se foram habituando a esta nova realidade e começámos a ver muitas partilhas nas redes sociais sobre a forma como eles estão a continuar os seus trabalhos com recurso às novas tecnologias. Mas houve também oportunidades para gestos muito pessoais. Há 10 dias, a Rainha Mathilde da Bélgica, acompanhada dos seus dois filhos mais novos, o Príncipe Emmanuel e a Princesa Eléonore, levaram bolos caseiros e cerca de 50 bouquets de flores, apanhadas do jardim do palácio, para oferecer ao CPAS Maison Heysel - um lar de terceira idade - cujos utentes já se encontravam em isolamento profilático e impedidos de receber visitas.
For a few days, we knew little or nothing about the royal families, except for some official announcements about the cancellation of events. Gradually they too became accustomed to this new reality and we started to see many shares on social networks about how they are continuing their work using new technologies. But there were also opportunities for very personal gestures.. 10 days ago, Queen Mathilde of Belgium, accompanied by her two youngest children, Prince Emmanuel and Princess Eléonore, took homemade cakes and about 50 bouquets of flowers, picked from the palace garden, to offer CPAS Maison Heysel - a nursing home - whose users were already in prophylactic isolation and prevented from receiving visitors.
Dias depois, a marcar o inicio da Primavera e de forma a promover a solidariedade e manter a esperança bem presente nestes momentos dificeis, a Casa Real Belga divulgou uma imagem dos quatro filhos do Rei Philippe e da Rainha Mathilde. Elisabeth (que retornou de Gales onde estava a estudar), Gabriel, Emmanuel e Eléonore fizeram waffles para oferecer a utentes e profissionais de dois lares de terceira idade nas imediações do Palácio onde vivem. As crianças também conversaram via telefone com alguns idosos para que eles se sentissem menos sozinhos.
Days later, marking the beginning of spring and in order to promote solidarity and keep hope very present in these difficult times, the Royal Belgian House released an image of the four children of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde. Elisabeth (who returned from Wales where she was studying), Gabriel, Emmanuel and Eléonore made waffles to offer to users and professionals from two nursing homes in the vicinity of the Palace where they live. The children also chatted over the phone with some elderly people to make them feel less alone.
Mais recentemente a Rainha Mathilde gravou um video na residência oficial dos monarcas belgas - o Castelo de Laeken. A consorte belga encoraja os jovens belgas, que actualmente se encontram em casa em confinamento, a aproveitarem o tempo livre para lerem. Para o efeito Mathilde leu um extracto do livro " Jusqu’ici tout va bien" da autoria de Marie Colot e convidou todos a fazerem o mesmo. O livro ganhou recentemente o Prémio Victor de Literatura Juvenil.
More recently Queen Mathilde recorded a video at the official residence of the Belgian monarchs - Laeken Castle. The Belgian consort encourages young Belgians, who are currently at home in confinement, to take advantage of their free time to read. For this purpose Mathilde read an extract from the book "Jusqu’ici tout va bien" by Marie Colot and invited everyone to do the same. The book recently won the Victor Youth Literature Award.
Mathilde deu ainda outro conselho de modo a ajudar os jovens a lidarem com todas as emoções que poderão estar a sentir nesta fase difícil: escrever um diário para canalizar as suas emoções para que, daqui a alguns anos, possam ler o que escreverem e recordarem como lidaram com esta situação e a ultrapassaram.
Mathilde gave yet another piece of advice to help young people deal with all the emotions they may be experiencing in this difficult phase: to write a diary to channel their emotions so that, in a few years' time, they can read what they wrotee and remember how they dealt with this situation and overcame it.

Acho que todos nós poderíamos seguir este conselho, porque a saúde mental é das mais afectadas em tempos como os que estamos a viver.
I think we could all follow this advice, because mental health is one of the most affected in times like the ones we are experiencing.
