No dia 25 de Outubro Elisabeth, Duquesa de Brabant e filha mais velha do Rei Philippe e da Rainha Mathilde dos Belgas completou 18 anos. A data foi assinalada com uma celebração no Palácio Real em Bruxelas onde estiveram presentes membros da família real belga e os padrinhos de baptismo da aniversariante, autoridades belgas e jovens que, tal como Elisabeth, também nasceram em 2001.
On 25 October Elisabeth, Duchess of Brabant and eldest daughter of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians turned 18. The date was marked with a celebration at the Royal Palace in Brussels attended by members of the Belgian royal family and the baptism godparents of the birthday girl, Belgian authorities and young people who, like Elisabeth, were also born in 2001.

Durante a celebração, que foi transmitida em directo na televisão belga, os convidados puderam assistir à actuação de um duo de violinistas, Lorenzo Gatto e Sylvia Huang a uma exibição de ballet a cargo da Escola Real de Ballet de Antuérpia e por fim à actuação da cantora Blanche.

Mas esta cerimónia ficaria marcada por momentos importantes na vida de qualquer herdeiro ao trono. Elisabeth recebeu, das mãos do seu pai, o Rei, a Ordem de Leopoldo, a mais alta condecoração belga, composta por uma faixa púrpura, uma insígnia e um pequeno pin (a ser usado em ocasiões menos formais - como foi o caso).
But this ceremony would be marked by important moments in the life of any heir to the throne. Elisabeth received, from the hands of her father, the King, the Order of Leopold, the highest Belgian decoration, consisting of a purple sashe, an insignia and a small pin (to be worn on less formal occasions - as was the case).

Após este acto solene, a Princesa belga fez o seu primeiro discurso nas três linguas oficiais do país: francês, holandês e alemão. Calma, serena, Elisabeth falou em expectativas, memórias, gratidão. Palavras que emocionaram os pais que não conseguiram conter as lágrimas:
Following this solemn act, the Belgian Princess made her first speech in the three official languages of the country: French, Dutch and German. Calm, serene, Elisabeth spoke of expectations, memories, gratitude. Words that touched her parents who could not contain their tears:
"Estou muito feliz em poder comemorar aqui com vocês o meu décimo oitavo aniversário. Este momento ficará gravado para sempre na minha memória. Estes dezoito anos foram preenchidos com muitos momentos gratificantes que me tornaram a pessoa que sou hoje. Dezoito é a transição para a idade adulta. Elisabeth finalizou o seu discurso com uma mensagem para o seu povo, enaltecendo o compromisso para com o seu país. Algo que não ouvimos todos os dias da boca de um jovem de 18 anos.
Elisabeth concluded her speech with a message to her people, extolling her commitment to her country. Something we don't hear every day from the mouth of an 18 year old.
"Dezoito anos ... É uma jornada sobre o qual estou optimista. Eu sei que ainda tenho muito a aprender. É nisso que eu quero concentrar-me nos próximos anos: tentar entender melhor o mundo em que vivemos e contribuir para melhorá-lo, dando o melhor de mim. O país pode contar com o meu compromisso."

Eu não sei se alguém ai deste lado fica tão emocionado como eu com estas palavras, vindas de alguém tão jovem. Vivemos na Era da Influência, e eu acho que é cada vez mais importante rodear-nos de exemplos que nos inspirem a ser mais e melhor. Não precisamos de discursos de chefes de estado ou políticos. Cada um de nós pode inspirar a pessoa ao nosso lado, através das nossas acções positivas, através da nossa generosidade, através da nossa compaixão, através de uma palavra na hora certa. Pessoas normais podem ser heróis anónimos. Ainda assim, assistir ao crescimento destas meninas que nasceram com o destino traçado e que mostram abraçar o seu papel de uma forma tão madura e tão doce, também me inspira e comove! Muito!
I don't know if anyone on the other side of this screen is as emotional as I am with these words from someone so young. We live in the Age of Influence, and I think it is increasingly important to surround ourselves with examples that inspire us to be more and to be better. We do not need speeches by heads of state or politicians. Each of us can inspire the person next to us through our positive actions, through our generosity, through our compassion, through a word at the right time. Normal people can be anonymous heroes. Still, watching the growth of these girls who were born with their destiny set out and who embrace their role in such a mature and sweet way, also inspires and moves me! A lot!

Pais que resolveram criar os seus filhos de uma forma diferente da maneira como foram criados e que constituíram família numa época em que tudo se tornou mais mediático, mais exposto, e em que todas as suas acções são analisadas à lupa. Esta geração de pais, dentro da realeza, marcou um ponto de viragem.
But these were not the only inspiring words of the day. I know that we are very focused at this time on the figure of young royals and in love abput their very early speeches. But then we have the parents. Those we watch to get married, often hold for the first time a marriage for love and not by arrangement. Parents who decided to raise their children differently from the way they were raised and who were a family at a time when everything became more mediatic, more exposed, and all their actions are analyzed through the magnifying glass. This generation of parents, within royalty, has marked a turning point.

Admiro estes pais que para serem admirados pelos seus súbditos, têm que conseguir também ser admirados pelos seus filhos, ao mesmo tempo que os protegem e também preparam para um papel que ninguém escolheu ter ao nascer.

Das palavras de Philippe retenho uma frase: "Tu brilhas". E de facto Elisabeth tem uma luz tão bonita à sua volta que olhando para ela, ouvindo o que ela diz, da maneira como diz, não temos a menor dúvida de que a Bélgica terá um dia uma grande Rainha.
