Frederik e Mary visitam as Ilhas Faroe - Dia 1 / Frederik and Mary visit Faroe Islands - Day 1

And my friends, when looking at the photos of this visit, it is as if Frozen, Brave and Outlander have joined in a kind of royal version to create an animated film with history, beauty and a lot of tradition. On arrival, and throughout the first day, the family wore the traditional costumes of the Faroe Islands. A gift from the Faroese Parliament and local authorities for the family on the occasion of this visit.

In one of the first photographs released yesterday by the Danish royal house on its official Instagram, we can know a little more about these costumes: The man's costume is called "sjóstúka" and consists of a hat, shirt, an embroidered vest, a jacket, wool trousers down to the knees, long knitted wool socks and straps, traditionally made in the Faroese flag colors. The woman's costume is called "stakkur" and consists of a knitted sweater, a velvet chest cloth, an embroidered or woven scarf and apron, a woven skirt, a velvet belt and a black coat. The women still wear beautiful brooches and buckles on the belt with clear Celtic inspiration. We can also see that both Mary and her daughters wore long woolen gloves with no fingers. The girls still wear embroidered silk hats.

The Faroe Islands are located in the North Atlantic between Iceland and Scotland. The vast majority of the population of the Faroe Islands is of Norwegian and Scottish descent. Recent DNA analysis has revealed that the Y chromosomes of the island population, which traces male offspring, are 87% Scandinavian. Studies show that mitochondrial DNA, which traces female offspring, is 84% Scottish. The Faroese language is spoken throughout the archipelago as the mother tongue. Written Faroese (grammar and vocabulary) are more similar to Icelandic and Old Norwegian, although the spoken language is closer to Norwegian dialects on the west coast of Norway. However, Danish is also an official language and is universally spoken.
As a fan of wind, mist and mild temperatures, the Faroe Islands are definitely a region I'd like to meet.

In the afternoon Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary resumed their separate and joint agendas in the capital Tórshavn. Christian accompanied his father during a visit to a College which combines a Gymnasium, a Technical School and a Business School.

After speeches, Frederik and Mary joined the guests for a traditional dance of the Faroe Islands. And ,just like that, Frodo's Shire (Lord of the Rings)  also came to my head!
