If there are those who think that being a princess is only wearing long dresses, living in a palace and wearing tiara, there are times when we can see the intervention of these people at the highest level and humbly acknowledge the impact from their work, the causes they promote that and the platform they use to make themselves heard.

Later the future Queen of Denmark attended, for the first time, the Session of the European Parliamentary Assembly where she addressed the Assembly. In the focus of her speech, the human rights and the need to pass the principles and values underlying human rights to the new generations:

“Although human rights are inherent to us all, they are also fragile… we must never take them for granted, nor expect that they will always be granted.” “They are the basic freedoms that belong to every person in the world, from birth to death. They apply regardless of where you are from, what you believe, or how you choose to live your life.”

As the great ambassador for Domestic Violence and Women's Rights for Gender Equality, UN Global Goal # 5 for Sustainable Development, Mary highlighted the work of the European Council on equal opportunities and equal treatment addressed in the Istanbul Convention, in what Mary considers "the golden standard" for the protection of women against domestic violence. The recent #MeToo movement that promotes freedom for all women to talk about the sexual abuse or discrimination they were victims of, has also not been forgotten.

“Striving for equality is not only the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do”.

In a reference to sexual rights, Mary reminds us that these rights are among the most controversial, but at the same time the most fundamental human rights, because "They enable one to make informed decisions about the most basic aspects of one’s life: one’s body, sexuality, health and relationships.” But Mary recalls:

“Even as we enter 2018, too many lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transsexuals and intersex people continue to be victims of hatred, violence, discrimination, bullying and ill-treatment, and this we cannot, and must not, accept.”

In her speech, the Duchess of Cambridge referred to the importance of early intervention in initiating dialogue on mental health:

"But, as you here today know: starting a conversation is just that – it's a start. This is particularly true of the conversations that take place in our schools, and with our children. I see time and time again that there is so much to be gained from talking of mental health and taking the mental health of our children as seriously as we do their physical health. When we intervene early in life, we help avoid problems that are much more challenging to address in adulthood."

Catherine spoke about her commitment to the theme of early intervention in children and the role of the school context in support and dialogue on mental health:

"My own commitment is to the youngest and most vulnerable in their early years - babies, toddlers and school-children – and to support all those who care for them. The role of teachers here is absolutely vital. You see our children as they grow, learn and play, as they build their social skills that will make the difference to their futures. You are uniquely placed to help children speak out about their mental and emotional challenges, and direct parents and carers to the right support.
I am all too aware, however, of how much we ask teachers to take on. Teachers want to help, but don't have the time to go hunting for the best information and advice out there. You need resources you can trust. And you need to have easy access to them at all times."

The Duchess finalized her heart felted speech asking for the collaboration and the feedback of all the interested about this project:

"I would ask each of you here today to work with the Foundation to develop this new essential resource. Please let us know what works, what doesn't, and what else you would like to see. This project has been collaboration from day one. It will only succeed if we continue to work together. And with that in mind, it's so exciting to see the Department for Education, represented by the Minister here today, taking such a close interest."
