O amargo comunicado da Casa Real Dinamarquesa / The bitter statement of the Danish Royal Household

Bem, ontem a Casa Real Dinamarquesa divulgou o seguinte comunicado:
Do you remember Henrikgate? Do you remember what I said about not believing in the thesis that he would be sick, because if he was the Royal House would have spoken in that direction to safeguard the monarchy and, above all, to protect the Prince? Well, yesterday the Danish Royal House released the following statement:

"Following a longer course of investigation, and most recently, a series of examinations conducted during late summer, a team of specialists at Rigshospitalet has now concluded that His Royal Highness Prince Henrik suffers from dementia.
The diagnosis implies a decline in The Prince’s cognitive functional level. The extent of the cognitive failure is, according to Rigshospitalet, greater than expected considering the age of The Prince, and can be accompanied by changes in behaviour, reaction patterns, judgement and emotional life and may therefore also affect the interaction with the outside world.
As a consequence of the diagnosis, The Prince will further downgrade his future activities, just as patronages and honorary memberships will be considered.
It is the wish of The Queen and the Royal Family that The Prince will have the peace and quiet as required by the situation."

Dementia is the term used to describe the symptoms of a broad group of diseases that cause a progressive decline in the functioning of a person. It is a comprehensive term that describes memory loss, intellectual ability, reasoning, social skills, and changes in normal emotional reactions. Although most people with dementia are elderly, it is important to note that not all elderly people develop dementia and that this is not part of the natural aging process. Dementia can occur in anyone, but it is more common after age 65. In some situations it can occur in people between the ages of 40 and 60 years. The World Health Organization estimates that worldwide there are 47.5 million people with dementia, which can reach 75.6 million by 2030 and almost triple by 2050 to 135.5 million. In this context, Alzheimer's disease plays a prominent role, representing around 60 to 70% of all cases of dementia (World Health Organization [WHO], 2015).

This statement leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. First of all I know from experience how much dementia is painful to the patient and the next family, who in most cases are the primary caregivers. It is something terrible, strenuous physical and above all psychologically. The sense of helplessness is enormous, the sense of guilt that sometimes takes care of the closest caregivers is huge and it is sometimes in these cases that many patients suffer physical and verbal violence. Simply due out of ignorance , lack of patience or tiredness from their caregivers.

I do not take a word to what I said about Henrik, because above all, his statements and calls for attention are not new. BUT ... and although the diagnosis was only now confirmed, there would certainly be signs. Especially if we take into account that Henrik has daily medical monitoring at home for years. Especially if we talk about people who have access to the best information and the best health care. At very best the royal family will have confused some symptoms as part of Henrik's eccentric personality, I think (and hope...).

But once again things get confusing: Joachim, Henrik's younger son, confirmed to the press that Henrik's decision not to be buried next to his wife has been known in the family for some time. Frederik, after his father's last statements in an interview at Cayx Castle in France, said he regretted many of his father's decisions.
When at the end of the summer Henrik was hospitalized in Copenhagen, his wife, Margarethe II stayed on vacation in France. Neither she nor their children visited Henrik at the hopistal, as far as we know. When, theoretically, tests were being done at that time that would confirm the diagnosis made public yesterday. Clearly the second paragraph in the statement serves to justify everything Henrik said this summer. Is weird. For me it's sad and weird!

By this I'm not saying this statement is false. By this I mean only that the situation was clearly badly handled by the royal house. And that this release comes wrapped in an aura of "damage control" that does not leave a good image of the Danish royal family at all. At least for me.

As a granddaughter of someone suffering from dementia, and who closely followed the evolution of a person under these conditions, the signs are very clear and do not appear properly overnight. For anyone who pays attention and is there to see! But I do not want to make too much value judgment about it. It's just sad and strange, as I said.
