Felipe VI & Letizia celebram 40 anos de Democracia / Felipe VI & Letizia Celebrate 40 Years of Democracy

40 years have passed since the first democratic elections took place in Spain in which members of the Congress and Senate were elected for the first Constituent Assembly. We were on June 15, 1977. At that time King Juan Carlos I reigned in Spain and in his speech at the solemn opening session of the Legislature on July 22 of the same year, the monarch said: "Democracy has begun!" And the first great achievement of the King Juan Carlos de Borbón's reign was accomplished.

40 years later, his son, Felipe VI accompanied by Queen Letizia, presided over the solemn commemoration of this great celebration for the History of Spain in the Cortes Generales. Felipe, in his eloquent tone that has been very captivating since 3 years ago he became King of all Spaniards, took exactly these words from his father 40 years ago and concluded: "Now we have to consolidate it!"

I do not hide how much I admire the speeches of both the King and the Queen of Spain. They are extensive, but always very human, emotional and, above all, extremely well prepared. On this very important occasion, especially if we keep in mind that Spain has gone from a dictatorial regime to a constitutional monarchy, I want to highlight some parts of Felipe VI's speech, because they are words that touch any person independently of the nationality and reality of those who read them. They are words meant for anyone who is part of any society.

"A society, when it recognizes the value and exemplary nature of those who deserve the gratitude of their countrymen, honors itself. And there are many people to whom we owe this gratitude, they are in the hearts  and minds of all of us. And senators elected in the June 15 elections had before them a historic responsibility for the political response to our mistakes of the past and overcoming the differences among the Spanish People, convinced that the Civil War and the dictatorship were, as stated below, in these Courts, an immense tragedy on which it couldn't be foment the future of Spain."

"Therefore, no path that starts in our democracy can not - and should not - lead to the breakdown of coexistence, the lack of democratic rights of all Spanish or the denial of the essential values of Europe to which we belong. And never less, it couldn't lead to the division between Spaniards or break the fraternal spirit that unites us.
Coexistence has its greatest guarantee and better protection in the standards that support it. Because the respect for these norms, in democracy, is not a threat or a warning to citizens, but rather represents the defense of their rights. Because it is within the law that democratic principles are based, which must be channeled to the solution of antagonisms and disagreements and to resolve differences through dialogue, through discussion.
And because outside the law, history teaches us, there is only chaos, imposition, insecurity and, ultimately, the very negation of freedom itself; Because, as an old quotation says: "Freedom always follows the same fate as the laws: it reigns and perishes with them."

"Allow me to conclude this presentation with a personal reference. On June 15, 1977, I was only nine years old. Like many other children and young people in our country, like many of you, well, we were not fully aware of what was happening in Spain.  In spite of our age, we also feel the intensity of the moment and experience different, sometimes contradictory feelings: first, concern, concern for the future, fear of failure, on the other hand, courage and bravery; And above all, a great enthusiasm, a lot of emotion and a lot of hope.
Nine years later, upon reaching the age of majority, and after swearing the Constitution before these Courts, I was able to share with my generation how courage and bravery prevailed over immobility and conformism; how the concern for the future and the fear of failure were defeated by the dream, determination and hope of the Spanish people. Therefore, courage, bravery, enthusiasm, determination and hope must always be present in our spirit to project our coexistence for the future and continue to promote the progress of our Nation.
And with these same attitudes, with these same sentiments 40 years later, the Crown reaffirms here before the legitimate representatives of national sovereignty, its irrevocable commitment to democracy, the understanding among all Spaniards and their coexistence in freedom."

[Snif, Snif...]

For such an important and solemn day, the Spanish Queen, left aside her stylist of choice for big events - Felipe Varela - and opted instead for her new friend Carolina Herrera. But she brought another great friend with her: red!

There is no doubt that the Queen of Spain knows that red suits her, and lately it has been quite frequent to see her in this color. The dress is beautiful, and has that shape that greatly favors the figure of the Queen consort of Spain. I loved the choice of shoes.

Leti completed the look with a low braided chignon, and with a pair of earrings and a bracelet of rubies and diamonds.

But do ou know what I missed? I wish King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia had also been present in this session. Apart from the errors of the King emeritus, at the personal level, at the end of his reign, we must NEVER forget his important contribution to Spain's entry into the path of democracy and freedom.
