Thank you for the messages of understanding and solidarity sent from everywhere. I promised I'd be back this week and here I am. With a lighter heart, but still sad and full of heat. I had planned many things for this week, but curiously I chose to make a post that was not planned, because when I saw the photos I had a huge desire to go there. To the land where there is rain, cold and fog all year long: Scotland!

Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Crown Mette-Marit of Norway began, last Friday, a two-day visit to the Orkney Islands, Scotland, on the occasion of the 900th death anniversary of the Earl of Orkney (born Magnus Erlendsson Orknøyjarl) who died a martyr, later being canonized and becoming Patron Saint of the Orkney Islands. Magnus, with Norwegian royal ancestry, is the inspiration for the Annual Saint Magnus Festival celebrated on these Scottish islands.

The Norwegian Crown couple joined this year's Festival celebrations representing the strong ties that link Norway to Orkney. These islands even became part of the territory and Norwegian domain from 875 until the 15th century when they were annexed by Scotland. There is still a strong Norwegian cultural and even linguistic influence in Orkney.

On the first day of the visit the Norwegian royal couple paid their respects to some Norwegians who died during the war and who found their final rest at the St Olaf Cemetery in Kirkwall.

Later, Haakon and Mette-Marit were received at the Kirkwall City Hall for a lunch where the Norwegian Crown Prince did not forget to extol the close links between Norway and the Orkney Islands. Haakon said in his speech that Norway's National Day, celebrated on 17 May, is also celebrated in Orkney, and that every year Norway sends two Christmas trees to Kirkwall in December.

In his speech Haakon also extolled the qualities of Earl of Orkney, Magnus, known for his kindness, recognizing that , by historical accounts, Magnus was not a typical Viking:

"I guess it's safe to say, he was not your typical viking earl... Celebrating the life of St Magnus gives us an opportunity to value the character of this man – and maybe try to learn something from him. Unfortunately – in Magnus’ case – there was no earthly pay back for his gentleness, as he ended up being murdered on his cousin and rival Haakon’s command – who was the other earl of Orkney. Still – the saga of St Magnus is an inspiration to acknowledge that we always have a choice: To use violence or to seek peaceful solutions. To put people or power first. To try to do the right thing even if it has a cost."

Then Haakon and Mette-Marit visited the  St. Magnus Cathedral, whose construction began in 1137. There are many similarities between this cathedral and the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway.

St. Magnus Cathedral was also the stage for the Festival opening concert in that same afternoon, where the Trondheim Soloists and the singers of the BBC performed.

The next day the Norwegian couple visited Skara Brae on the second day of their visit to the Orkney Islands. Skaa Brae is a Neolithic village considered by many to be one of the most important prehistoric sites in Europe and recognized in 1999 by UNESCO as a world heritage site.

The eight houses are remarkably well preserved, considering how ancient they are. The sand dunes surrounding the settlement helped to preserve them.
