#HaraldSonja80 - Dia/Day 1

For more things that are happening in our lives, there is always time to attend a historic moment like the 80th anniversary of a loving couple, who coincidentally are King and Queen of Norway.

Harald, who was born in January, and Sonja, who effectively turns 80 in July, decided to choose two days in May for the joint celebration of such an important age. To this end they invited several family and friends, members of European royalty and other heads of state from important allied countries of Norway. Yesterday it culminated in a grand banquet at the Royal Palace. Which means, yesterday was Christmas day for many royal watchers. You can watch the full coverage here.

Almost late in the afternoon, hundreds of people gathered in front of the Royal Palace in Oslo to attend the celebrations where several artists performed and sang and danced in front of the royal residence. But the great moment was when the royal family went out on the balcony to hear the "Happy Birthday to you" addressed to the King and the Queen. In the Central Balcony King Harald V, Queen Sonja, Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, Princess Martha-Louise, and the five grandchildren of the royal couple

On the secondary porches, the royal guests. Already dressed up for the Gala Banquet, we can get the first glimpse of the jewels chosen for this special day. And we would not be disappointed. But let's wait a second to talk about that... Present at the celebrations yesterday were members of the royal families of Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, Holland, United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Greece and Monaco.

Then the guests headed inside where they prepared their entrance to the Gala Dinner.
Let's talk about dresses and tiaras?

Noruega / Norway

...Bem, vamos lá!! Coragem Lu!!
...Well, let's go!! Courage Lu !! Come on, you can find words !! Go for it !! Okay, if there are reasons to wear a lime green ball gown that looks like it came out of an Oz masquerade ball, that's when you're a Queen and you're 80!
Sonja used Queen Josephine's fantastic set of emeralds! A shame the shades of green do not match, but remember: a queen who turns 80 can do everything she wants!!

When I saw the first image of MM in white I was hopeful. MM always looks good in white. Well, no!! This new dress has neither shape nor beauty in my opinion. The hairstyle did not favor her. And with that tone of hair it is difficult to notice any tiara. Even when it comes to a début for MM. The Crown Princess of Norway used the Vifte tiara for the first time (it had previously been used as a necklace). But even that wasn't enough to save the day, in my opinion!

Princess Martha-Louise is always a breath of fresh air. Personally I find the youngest daughter of the King and Queen of Norway very beautiful. The dress she had chosen had everything to do with her, a beautiful color, something irreverent, and the belt gave it the bling touch, also a Martha Louise feature. I loved the necklace. The Norwegian Princess wore her personal tiara, a gift from King Olav on the occasion of her 18th birthday.

Princess Astrid, the King's sister faithful to her style, used Queen Maud's Turquoise Tiara.

I love seeing Mathilde in red. This dress had previously been praised here. And I repeat everything I said. Mathilde was very well, though the St Olav Order Sash did not stand out there. The Belgian Queen wore the magnificently placed Wolfers tiara in a perfect hairstyle.

Dinamarca / Denmark

Queen Margrethe II, who seemed very frail yesterday, chose an almost turquoise green dress that she completed with her Aigrette Floral tiara she wears on very special occasions.

Crown Princess Mary was fine, but far from dazzling me. I think above all the color of the dress, despiste it's lovely,  does not favor Mary's skin tone. I also like the shape of the skirt and I loved the fabric of the dress, but on the whole it was nothing special. The princess wore her new tiara-necklace, which seems to be a favorite.

Holanda / The Netherlands
From here came the greatest contradiction of feelings of the day. Well, Queen Maxima wore a dress I adore (perhaps one of my ever favorites!), she wore a mega-tiara appropriate for a celebration - the Mellerio Diamonds and Sapphire Tiara - and a fantastic matching brooch. And yet, I think this dress calls for more simplicity with the jewelry. There is something in the look that juts does not fit right ... Is it just me?

Princess Beatrix was also present and I loved her ethnic look, complete with a tiara that is huge, but the hair of the former Dutch Queen hides very well - the Württemberg Ornate Pearl Tiara.

Who was also present and brought a pleasant surprise with you was Princess Mabel of Oranje-Nassau. The widow of Prince Johan Friso of the Netherlands wore a bicolour dress with a bow around her waist, of course. And she used the Button Pearl Tiara for the first time. Love to see Mabel again! (Just a curiosity: her late husband was godson of King Harald of Norway!).

Luxemburgo / Luxembourg

A Grã-Duquesa usou a Tiara Belgian Scroll.
Grand Duchess Maria Teresa brought us the magic of long coats (according to the Luxarazzi blog, this pink coat is a modified version of the coat that MT used in 2001 in the wedding of Haakon and MM of Norway). The Grand Duchess used the Belgian Scroll Tiara.

Hereditary Grand Duchess Stephanie wore a gray dress, the color of which does not favor her very much but is rather handsome from the waist down. To complete the Princess wore Grand Duchess Maria Adelaide tiara, with a sapphire as a central stone. The sapphire and diamond necklace is exquiste!

Oh yes, the Greek  (and Danish) cousins were there too. Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, in blue, is always a pleasant presence and has brought us the splendor of Queen Olga's ruby set.

Princess Marie-Chantal brought us patterns on a night marked by monochromatic looks. I loved this floral dress. and as always I love her very own Tiara Fringe. Here Marie-Chantal is accompanied by Lady Elizabeth Shakerl, cousin of Queen Elizabeth II and also representative of the United Kingdom in the celebrations.

TATIANA!! Simples, elegante, irreverente! Tudo junto!
TATIANA!! Without a doubt she's in my top 3! Simple, elegant, irreverent! All together! The Greek Princess wore the greek Corsage Tiara to match this gorgeous green dress. In the picture we can also see Princess Sofia of Sweden.

Queen Silvia was another of the European Queens to bring a mega tiara to the celebrations. Silvia brought us the Sapphire Tiara from the Leuchentberg set which she completed with an elegant sapphire blue dress.

Nunca!!
Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden was another who entered on my top 3. The blue dress is a repeat, but how it does fit her well? I loved the major earrings and of course her Baden Fringe Tiara never looks bad! Never!!

Sofia of Sweden first used the Six Buttons Diamond Tiara. If you are going to wear one of the Swedish Button Tiaras this is the one to go. I was curious to see how this tiara suits the Princess, and the truth is that she passed immediately to the second tiara that best suits her, behind the amethysts tiara. The hairstyle helped, of course! Pregnant for the second time, Sofia recycled the Oscar de La Renta dress that she wore at the Nobel's in 2015 when she was pregnant with Alexander. Still, I wish I had seen something more colorful.

Reino Unido / United Kingdom

WOW!
WOW! There is no other word to describe the one that was the best on the night in my opinion. Among Kings and Queens, Princes and Princesses, was a Countess who stood out. Sophie, Countess of Wessex, assiduous presence at royal European events was absolutely fantastic with this look. The cut of the dress is divine, especially in movement. Sophie chose to wear the Diamond Tiara with a central aquamarine! Perfection!

E para vocês? Quem esteve melhor?
And for you? Who was better?

During the banquet there were speeches. It is worth to know what someone who turns 80 years has to say:

Harald:
É assim que eu me sinto hoje.

"A wise man – and that is not myself! – once said:
“Inside every old person is a young person wondering what happened.”
That is how I feel today. I look at the number 80, and I cannot really understand that it has got anything to do with me. At least nothing to do with the Queen – who is incredibly fit!
I have had a hard time catching up with her for a long time already!
But fortunately – after almost 50 years of marriage, we are still in this together. We work together, we share experiences, we face worries and joys together.
So tonight is an evening for gratitude.
The Queen and I want to thank every one of you who are here tonight to share this celebration with us. A special thank you to those of you who have travelled far.
We appreciate it deeply.
Many of us gathered here are members of the same European family, we are friends – and colleagues. I believe it is valuable for all of us who are in the “royal profession” to come together – also across generations – and discuss matters of common concern. We are living in uncertain times, and in societies with fast changes. Especially in times like these, we should value and nourish long standing and deep relations like ours.
Celebrating our 80th anniversary is nothing we take for granted.
We are blessed with good health.
We are blessed with a wonderful family.
We are blessed with loyal friends who have stood by our side through ups and downs.
And we are blessed with a meaningful life in service for our country and our people.
What more can we wish for?
Tonight, I hope we can be together in a spirit of gratitude for life.
Every day is a gift that we should never take for granted.
Every day is an opportunity to do good.
Every day we can be there for our loved ones.
And we can acknowledge those who need to be seen.
So dear friends, a warm welcome to all of you – and thank you again for being here.
I hope we will all have a good time together. "

Sonja:

" What an evening!
If I had known it was going to be this fun, I would have liked to turn 80 a long time ago! But to be quite frank: Just like my husband, I don’t feel like 80 at all.
The Columbian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez has helped me describe why in his famous novel “Love in the Time of Cholera”:
He writes:
“Age has no reality except in the physical world. The essence of a human being is resistant to the passage of time. Our inner lives are eternal, which is to say that our spirits remain as youthful and vigorous as when we were in full bloom.”
To me, that explains it beautifully! Isn’t this true to all of us..?
And I would like to add an aspect that my husband always reminds me of: The importance of playing, of having fun!
When we where in South Africa in February, the two of us suddenly found ourselves in quite a rare situation: We were sitting quietly next to each other – for the second day! – reading our books. Then Harald turned to me and said slowly: “Sonja, this is the closest we’ll ever get to retirement.”
I want to thank each and every one of you who have contributed here tonight. Thank you so much for warm words and for great fun!
You have made this evening unforgettable!
Dear Queen Margrethe, you have been a vital support all since I became part of this family. In addition to being an invaluable adviser, you are a close friend with whom I share common interests like nature and the arts. Thank you so much for all our walks and talks, and for your ability to discover comic aspects on special occations!
I feel deeply privileged to be able to share this celebration with you all tonight.
I want to thank Haakon and Märtha, Mette and Ari – and all our wonderful grandchildren, for a relationship based on trust, love and respect.
Nothing matters more at this stage in life – feeling that we belong together and that we can enjoy each other’s company across generations.
I want to thank Haakon and Mette in a very special way. Thank you for the strength we feel by working together, by giving each other space, showing each other understanding and support. Thank you for your openness, for discussions, and for fun!
And dear Märtha, thank you for being who you are. Thank you for being such a couragous person and loving daughter. In difficult periods, your laughter lights up the day and makes us all happy!
I want to thank the rest of our family, Princess Astrid in particular, and our friends – some of you have been with us for almost 80 years! That is invaluable – and perhaps especially in lives like ours.
Now – we are celebrating birthdays. I have already received my present from my husband. He is known to be a modest man, so he gave me one of his own belongings: A stable, which was already in his possession here on the Palace grounds. The stable will be transformed into a gallery open to the public as Queen Sonja Art Stable, in July. Not that I am not grateful – I really am! In fact, I was completely overwhelmed and deeply touched…
But I decided to give you something in return, my dear Harald. My gift to you is also a house, it is a “stabbur”, a store house, for our chalet Prinsehytta. A store house was in the old days used as a place to keep and preserve food. So when I admire art in the stable, you can admire the victims of your hunting and fishing exhibitions in the store house!
In closing, I would like to repeat and build on Harald’s call to gratitude for life in his welcoming speech.

Because:
Every day is a gift that we should never take for granted.
Every day is an opportunity to do good.
Every day we can be there for our loved ones.
And we can acknowledge those who need to be seen.

Let us take this with us in our everyday lives, wherever we live. Because above all – regardless of roles – we are human beings. People who are meant to support each other.
Thank you – each and every one of you – so much for being here, for sharing this celebration with us! This is truly a night to remember!"

I do not know about you, but I'm crying a river with these speeches and grateful to know that at age 33 I give value to things that most people only value at the end of their lives !!
Less the part of the hunting and fishing trophies, of course!
Thank you Harald and Sonja. I was not at the dinner, but I felt that their words were meant to go beyond the limits of that hall. They were not the words of a King and a Queen. They were the words of two human beings for their family, for their friends. They were words of someone who at age 80' knows that what matters most in life, is exactly that:  life and the blessing that is simply to live it !! Happy Birthday!!
