Morte do Príncipe Richard e o Drama Sucessório na Casa Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg / Death of Prince Richard and the Succession Drama at Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg House

Today we start with something different, but it shows us that in the world of monarchies and royal houses, there are still many traditions and prejudices to be overcome in the XXI century.

The Danish royal house today announced the death of Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, the husband of Princess Benedikte of Denmark. The German Prince was 82 years old and had struggled for years with health problems. He died last night at his home, the Berleburg Castle, in Germany.

Richard and Benedikte were married in 1968 and had three children: Gustav, Alexandra and Nathalie.
Gustav is now the new Head of House Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, and it seems that he will be the 7th Prince. But is this a peaceful transition?

Explico-vos melhor.
I'll explain to you better. Gustav lives for several years with the American writer Carina Axelsson. Carina is for all intents and purposes the life companion of the Prince, accompanying him to various official events (in which she even wears tiaras of the royal vaults) and sharing with him residence in the castle of Berleburg. You can follow her on Instagram. Seems to be a lovely person.

A Princess for all purposes except one: the title. Gustav's grandfather, Gustav Albrecht, the 5th Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, left in testament that, in order to protect the family estate and the line of succession, all his heirs should be equally married and be Protestant.

Carina, born in California, has Mexican and Swedish ancestry. A marriage in the light of the current laws of the German House of Princes would jeopardize Gustav's succession rights. Can things continue as they have been so far? Yes, although since an official union is not permitted between the two, the estate and titles of the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg House will pass to the nearest male heir, who meets the requirements of the will, who in this case is the brother of the great cause of this confusion: Prince Christian Heinrich, 5th Prince Of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein.

Now Christian died in 1983. His son Bernhart is the current Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Hohenstein. Bernhart married Countess Katharina von Podewils-Dürnwitz, which makes him eligible to inherit the succession rights of the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg House, if Gustav marries Carina or dies without  legitimate children.

Schloss Berleburg
As it turns out, even though we have divorced women and single mothers married with Crown Princes, there are still many difficulties associated with inheritance rights. The most ironic thing is that we are talking about a small branch of the German Nobility, in a country where there is no monarchy and in which these titles are not officially recognized by the Government ...

Carina and Gustav often spend holidays with the Danish royal family. Carina is one of the six Godparents of Princess Athena of Denmark and she is also Godmother of Prince Philipp of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. She is a nature and fashion lover, and very passionate about her two dogs and for what she does. I think she will be an amazing Princess!
