Homenagem às Vítimas dos Ataques Terroristas em Bruxelas / Tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks in Brussels

In light of everything that happened in London yesterday (my thoughts are with the families and victims of this attack) it seems appropriate to me to bring here  King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium tribute to the victims of the Brussels bombings of 22 March 2016. Yes, precisely a year ago yesterday.

It was in the morning that a tribute ceremony was held for the victims of the attacks that devastated the country last year. 32 people were killed and 260 wounded when Muslim extremists attacked Zaventem airport and Maelbeek metro station in Brussels. Several people of all cultures, creeds and provenances have taken to the streets to show that we are all part of the human species and that in the face of terror, fear, uncertainty and an invisible force that simply does not fear death, the best way to act is to show Union, Compassion, Solidarity, Love and Courage.  These are the things that set us apart from all those who act with the firm purpose of spreading Fear and Terror. These are the things that will make a difference, so that men and women of faith and good heart move forward! Every day!

These tribute ceremonies were held in collaboration between various government and civilian organizations and the victims 'family members' association. The sculpture by Jean-Henri Compere is called “Wounded But Still Standing in Front of the Inconceivable” and is constructed from two 20-metre-long horizontal surfaces rising skywards.

Philippe and Mathilde participated in all the events during the day, talking to victims and family members and letting the pain and emotion, that is certainly difficult to contain on occasions like these show up. I who am here, in peace and safety, I am full of tears in the eyes just to see these photographs ...

I want to leave here the shortest and most meaningful speech of King Philippe at the time.

"Dear families,
With countless victims around the world, you share the deep wounds caused by deadly madness.
Let me put to you this one conviction: it is the responsibility of each and every one of us to make our society more humane and more just. Let us learn to listen to each other again, to respect each other’s weaknesses and to put them right. And above all, let us dare to be tender.

On this day of awareness and recollection, our country owes you this commitment."

"Vamos atrever-nos a ser mais bondosos"... Obrigada Philippe!
"Let's dare to be tender" ... Thank you Philippe!
