A origem da celebração remonta há 184 anos atrás quando Léopold, Príncipe de Saxe-Cobourg e Gotha, se torna no primeiro Rei dos Belgas a 21 de Julho de 1831. Léopold era irmão da Duquesa Victoria de Kent, mãe da futura Rainha Victoria do Reino Unido.
