Sonhos com História #5 / Dreaming with History #5

Hoje trago-vos um desafio: como está o vosso dinamarquês? Para mim este filme ganhou pontos extra porque manteve a língua nacional do local de origem e de cenário desta produção. Apesar de nesta altura a língua oficial da corte dinamarquesa ser o alemão.

Na semana em que as duas princesas da Dinamarca fizeram anos ( Mary a 5 de Fevereiro e Marie a 6 de Fevereiro), escolhi um filme que conta a história de como um romance pode mudar o destino de uma nação.

Today I bring you a challenge: how's your Danish? For me this film earned extra points because it kept the national language of the place of origin and setting of this production. Although by the storyline time the official language of the Danish court was German. 

In the week that the two Princesses of Denmark celebrated their birthdays (Mary on February 5th and Marie at February 6th ), I chose a film that tells the story of how an affair can change the destiny of a nation.

En kongelig affære/Um Caso Real / A Royal Affair

O filme vencedor de vários prémios conta a história de amor, baseada em factos reais, de Caroline Mathilde, rainha consorte da Dinamarca, nascida Princesa do Reino Unido, e o médio da corte Johann Friedrich Struensee.

A história tem como cenário a Dinamarca do séc. XVIII governada pelo Rei Christian VII, mentalmente perturbado.

The multiple award-winning film tells the love story, based on real facts, of Caroline Mathilde, Queen Consort of Denmark, née Princess of the United Kingdom, and the danish court physician Johann Friedrich Struensee. 

The story is set in the eighteen century Denmark ruled by King Christian VII, mentally disturbed.

Quando Caroline chega ao seu novo reino, cheia de ideias de inovação, depressa descobre que não iria ser muito feliz na conservadora e intransigente Dinamarca, nem no casamento com um homem insano. Ao mesmo tempo um médico alemão chega à Corte para tratar da saúde do Rei. Aos poucos vai ganhando a sua confiança e a admiração da Rainha, com quem acaba por ter um caso.

Aos poucos Struensee vai ganhando mais controlo sobre o Rei e com o apoio da Rainha começa uma jornada de reformas que ira desencadear uma convulsão política na Dinamarca. Os seus ideias iluministas que permitirão à Dinamarca crescer não são bem vistos pelos ministros e conselheiros reais mais conservadores e inicia-se uma verdadeira caça ao ponto de fraco deste triângulo de poder e romance.

When Caroline arrives at her new kingdom, full of ideas and innovation plans, quickly discovers that she would not be very happy in the conservative and uncompromising Denmark, nor in hermarriage to an insane man. At the same time a German doctor comes to the Court to treat the health of the King and he will gradually gaining his trust and admiration of the Queen, with who he ends up having an affair. 

Struensee will gradually gaining more control over the King and with the support of the Queen begins a journey of reforms that will trigger a political upheaval in Denmark. Its Enlightenment ideas that will lead Denmark to a progress and change road are not welcomed by most conservative ministers and royal advisers and  so it begins a hunt to the weaker point of this power and romance triangle.

O filme é retratado de uma maneira bastante real a meu ver. O desempenho dos actores é fascinante e acabamos por admirar de certa forma este casal que traiu e pagou o preço por essa traição, mas que ainda assim conseguiu fazer com que a Dinamarca desse um enorme passo em direcção à era moderna e ao respeito pelos direitos humanos. O próprio Rei admitiu até ao fim dos seus dias uma profunda admiração pelo seu físico.

The film is portrayed in a very real way in my view. The performance of the actors is fascinating and we ended up somehow admire this couple who cheated and paid the price for that betrayal, but still managed to make Denmark take such a huge step towards the modern era and for the respect for human rights . The King himself admitted until the end of his days a deep admiration for his former physician.

 Johann Friedrich Struensee: Your majesty.

Caroline Mathilde: You recognized me.

Johann Friedrich Struensee: I would recognize you blindfolded.

Caroline Mathilde: But your costume is not very imaginative.

Johann Friedrich Struensee: I'm afraid I'm not very good at the masquerade.

Caroline Mathilde: I believe this is the one night when everyone can be themselves.

[pause]

Caroline Mathilde: But you never remove your mask. Do you?
