Esplendor Real #23 / Royal Splendor #23

Today we return to talk about engagement rings. This time we talk about a country that seems to be quite patriotic when choosing their engagement rings.

The then Crown Princess Margrethe of Denmark and the French noble diplomat Henri de Labord almost not met. Both were invited to a party in London, where the princess was studying. He almost didn't attend because he knew that the future Queen of Denmark would be present (and he was affraid to get bored). However he actually attended and he was fascinated by her personality. Margrethe did not give in that night but when she fell in love, it was a hard deal. The engagement was announced and the couple married on 10 June 1967.

Both have quirky personalities and the ring chosen by Henri for her Daisy is just like that. The creation is from Van Cleef & Arpels and shows two huge diamonds entwined in a clear sign of fellowship that is present until today in this couple.

In 2000, during the Olympic Games in Sydney a commoner Tasmanian born met at a local bar a handsome young man who introduced himself only as Fred. Empathy was ready and so started a Cinderella story in modern times between Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark and Mary Donaldson. After a distance romance, Mary decides to move to distant Denmark and begins to officially appear next Frederik. The announcement was made in October 2003 and in May 2004, Denmark gets a new Crown Princess.

In a symbolic gesture to welcome the bride to her new country, Frederik decided to offer Mary a ring with the colors of Denmark. An emerald cut diamond surrounded by two rubies. For many years the Princess kept the ring so until 2012 the ring underwent a change: two diamonds were added to each end (according to many a gesture that can symbolize the couple's four children and Frederik).

However, was the youngest son of Margrethe II and Henrik who first announced his engagement. Joachim met the executive Alexandra Manley in Hong Kong. The engagement announcement in 1995 caught many by surprise but resulted in a magnificent Snow wedding in November of the same year. For some years (until the marriage of Frederik to Mary) Alexandra worked as Crown Princess and gave the first two grandchildren to queen Margrethe. The wedding would eventually not work and the divorce announcement occurred in 2004, and Alexandra lost her status as Princess of Denmark, but she has the title of Countess of Frederiksborg. She  remarried in 2007.

Joachim was the first to remember to present his bride with a ring in the national colors. Known for designing several pieces himself (have pulled the artistic vein of his mother), Joachim chose this ring with a large central diamond surrounded by two spherical rubies, based on a gold band.

Later in 2005 the first photographs of Joachim with a young French woman, Marie Cavallie, arise. After several meetings, including with the sons of Joachim and his former wife Alexandra, Marie met the royal family in the Easter holidays in 2007. In October of the same year the Royal House announced the engagement of Joachim and Marie. The couple's wedding was in May 2008 and Denmark wins another M to its Royal Treasury.

This time Joachim, found that the national colors of Denmark were already to much seen in some ladies of the royal house and decided to pay homage to the homeland of his bride. A sapphire, a diamond and a ruby literally represent the colors of the French tricolor, based on a gold band with a giraffe pattern (?). Marie does not always use this ring, and we can see why.

Qual o vosso favorito?
What's your favorite?

"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with a passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, --- I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! --- and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death."

By Elizabeth Barret Browning

Poem sent by Mary to Frederik during her courtship

  2. As you may have guessed is my favorite ring Mary's! I beautiful, elegant and great together with her wedding ring. Over the year there has been added some more stones at the ring which I really like.
But I have to say, Queen Margrethe's ring is also very beautiful :)
