Tinha planeado mais um post sobre anéis de noivado, mas fica adiado para a próxima semana, porque esta é a jóia do momento. Uma das muitas tiaras da colecção dos Windsor que esta semana saltou para as luzes da ribalta quando a Duquesa de Cambridge a usou para a Recepção Diplomática no Palácio de Buckingham no passado dia 3.

O que sabemos então nós desta peça?

I had planned another post about engagement rings, but let´s delay it to next week, because this is the jewel of the moment. One of the many tiaras in the Windsor jewels's collection that this week jumped into the spotlight when the Duchess of Cambridge wore it to the Diplomatic Reception at Buckingham Palace on the 3rd.

So, what then do we know about this tiara?

The Lotus Flower Tiara

Esta tiara também conhecida por “Papyrus Leaf Tiara” é uma delicada tiara de diamantes que possui cinco conjuntos de flores de lotus em diamantes ligados us aos outros por motivos e rodeadas por arcos de diamantes redondos. Cada arco possui no topo um solitário, excepto o arco central que é coroado com uma pérola. Duas outras pérolas são visíveis na base da tiara.. Trata-se de uma peça que remonta ao início do séc. XX e que não era originalmente uma tiara.

This tiara also known as "Papyrus Leaf Tiara" is a delicate diamond tiara that has five sets of lotus flowers in diamonds linked to each others by scrolls and surrounded by arches of round diamonds. Each arc has at the top a solitary except the central arch that is topped with a pearl. Two other pearls are visible at the base of the tiara.  This is a piece that dates back to the beginning of the twentieth centuary and it was not originally a tiara.

Por volta de 1923 foi oferecido a Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, por ocasião do seu casamento com Albert, Duque de York (futuro rei George VI) um colar de diamantes e pérolas de inspiração grega e encomendado a Gerrard.

Esta peça seria posteriormente modificada a transformada na tiara que conhecemos. A Duquesa de York usou-a com frequência ao estilo anos 20. Mais tarde, já Rainha preferiu o uso de outras tiaras.

By 1923 it was offered to Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, on the occasion of her marriage to Albert, Duke of York (the future King George VI) a necklace of diamonds and pearls with some Greek inspired and commissioned to Gerrard.

This piece was later modified and transformed into the tiara we know. The Duchess of York wore it as 20's style. Later, as Queen she preferred other tiaras.

A tiara passou para a filha mais nova de Elizabeth e George VI, a Princesa Margaret, que detinha o empréstimo exclusivo da tiara. A princesa usou-a muito durante a sua juventude, principalmente. Por essa altura a tiara pode ter sofrido uma ligeira modificação para poder ser usada na cabeça e não como bandeau.

The tiara passed to the younger daughter of George VI and Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, who had the exclusive loan of the tiara. The princess wore it a lot during her youth mainly. By that time the tiara may have suffered a slight modification in order to be used in the head and not as bandeau.

Margaret emprestou ainda a tiara à sua nora, Serena Stanhope, que a usou no dia do seu casamento em 1993 com o Visconde Linley.

Margaret also lent the tiara to her daughter in-law, Serena Stanhope, who wore it on her wedding day in 1993 with Viscount Linley.

Após a morte da Rainha-mãe em 2002, a tiara terá sido herdada pela sua filha a Rainha Elizabeth II.
After the death of the Queen Mother in 2002, the tiara have been inherited by her daughter Queen Elizabeth II.

Recentemente a Rainha emprestou esta peça, que não era vista desde 1993, à Duquesa de Cambridge, naquela que foi a sua segunda aparição de tiara. Infelizmente as fotografias que temos da Duquesa não deixam ver a tiara no seu esplendor, mas eu tenho a certeza que é uma peça lindíssima para Catherine…se ela saber usá-la bem.

Recently the Queen loaned this piece, which was not seen since 1993, to the Duchess of Cambridge, in what was her second tiara appearance. Unfortunately the photos we saw from the Duchess didn't let us to see the tiara in all its splendor, but I'm sure it's a beautiful piece to Catherine ... if she knows how to wear it well.

Pessoalmente e contrariando  a maioria das pessoas, eu adoro a maneira como a Duquesa de York usou esta peça, muito típica dos anos 20. Acho que lhe ficava muito bem. Margaret usou esta peça muito bem, combinada com vários penteados que mostravam a peça de várias formas. Serena...bem o que dizer daquele penteado? Penso que terá sido uma homenagem à sua sogra no dia do seu próprio casamento.

Quanto a Catherine, eu acho que esta tiara tem a delicadeza, elegância e beleza que assenta que nem uma luva na Duquesa de Cambridge. Mas, e há sempre um mas com Catherine, ela tem que saber usar uma tiara é diferente de usar um chapéu.

Espero que na pior da hipóteses, daqui a um ano, ela nos surpreenda...pela positiva.

Personally, and contrary to most people, I love the way the Duchess of York wore this piece, very typical of the 20s. I think it was very good. Also Margaret wore it very well combined with various hairstyles showing the tiara in several ways. Serena ... well what about that hair? I think it was a tribute to her mother-in-law on the day of her own wedding.
As for Catherine, I think this tiara has the delicacy, elegance and beauty that lies like a glove on the Duchess of Cambridge beauty and grace. But, and there is always a but with Catherine, shemust learn that wearing a tiara is different to wear a hat.

I hope that in the worst-case scenario, one year from now she will surprise us by... the positive.
