Mette-Marit: Três dias, um comboio e muitos livros / Mette-Marit: Three days, a train and several books

Today I don't bring you the Swedish royal christening nor the British Trooping the Color. These themes are promised for this week, but today I decided to share with you one of my favorite royal initiatives of the year. It happens in Norway and involves a train and many books.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway is one of the great advocates of Literacy and passion for reading among the several royal houses. A cause she shares with names like the Duchess of Cornwall in the United Kingdom, or Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands. The future Queen of Norway is an unconditional fan of reading and during the year our Snow Princess holds a great number of events and initiatives to promote her passion for Norwegian literature and reading both nationally and internationally.

“I cannot imagine a life without books. Ever since I was a child, I have been read to and given the opportunity to enter a world of fantasy. The act of reading, the internal images it creates, the emotions it evokes – has made me a better, wiser and more thoughtful person.”

One of the best-known initiatives promoted annually by the Scandinavian Princess is the Literary Train Tour. The first edition of this initiative was in 2014 and is supported by the Norwegian State Railways and Oslo Public Library. The train, consisting of a coffee carriage, a passenger carriage and a library carriage, runs along a route that passes through some of the main Norwegian cities for three days. On board, the Crown Princess and several books from the Oslo Public Library and from her own private collection. When the carriage stops at a certain local station, anyone can come in, drink a cup of coffee, and read a good book.

Along the way, the Crown Princess organizes several literary meetings between authors and the public. These meetings usually take place in schools, public libraries, literature houses and railway stations. These meetings are all about sharing experiences and passion for reading that inspires each person to read more. These stimuli are, in my opinion, increasingly important in the younger generation.
During these more intimate encounters the public has the opportunity to be in contact with lesser-known national authors and to participate in reading sessions and writing workshops.

This year the tour started on 6 June in Kristiansand and ended on 8 June in Stavanger. In Kristiansand, Mette-Marit was in her old high school where she shared her concern with what the young people read today. During the visit the Crown Princess read, to everyone's surprise, a composition she wrote when she was a 9th grade student at that school.
The first stop was at the Marnardal station where the Princess was greeted by Elisabeth Glesne, 13, who won the 2017 Dream Stuff for her tale, "The Wet Beast in the Graveyard." The young girl made a read session to the Princess and audience.

On the second day of the Literary Train tour the train made stops in Egersund and Ogna, where the Crown Princess participated in two lectures with award-winning authors Monica Isakstuen and Helge Torvund on the theme of this year's Literature Day - Relationships. During the day there was a live broadcast of these lectures on Facebook via the official channel of the Norwegian Royal House, for which Mette-Marit invited all online viewers to send questions to the authors.

On the third and final day of the Literary Train the last stop was in Stavanger, where at the local Culture House and at the Silver Mountain Library, Mette-Marit conducted a literary meeting with author Zeshan Shakar and the Oslo Mayor, Marianne Borgen, about topics and tips about books.

It was the end of this annual journey that is undoubtedly one of the favorite initiatives of the Norwegian Princess who, since last year, is Ambassador of Norwegian Literature in the international arena, with a view to the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2019, where Norway will be the guest of honor. However, Mette-Marit's interest and involvement in Norwegian Literature is a constant, especially now that Norwegian literature seems to be gaining international recognition and projection.
