O Dia de Santa Lúcia na Escandinávia / Saint Lucia Day at Scandinavia

The legend tells that Lucia was a martyr who lived in Syracuse, Sicily, born in 283 and was engaged to a Pagan. In the year 304, Luzia persuaded her mother to give her her wedding gift and in the possession of it she gave it to the poor. Her fiancé, displeased with the decision, accused her of being a Christian. Being a Christian in Roman society was illegal and subject to punishment and Lucia was sentenced to be sent to a brothel. When it was time to turn her in, it froze so hard they could not move her. They made a fire round about her, but the fire did not consume her, so they sent the executioner who beheaded her. Even today there is half of one of the vertebrae of her neck, in the Church of San Geremia in Venice.

But this legend about Saint Lucia has little meaning for the Scandinavians, who are mostly unaware of their sad, macabre history, and celebrations today have a more joyful and connected significance to the coming of light in the dark night.

The Feast of Saint Lucia is celebrated on December 13 (the longest night of the year according to the ancient Julian calendar). A night, where pagan and Christian beliefs mingle, once considered as the most perilous night in the superstitious imagery of the people, where supernatural forces were active and a mere snowstorm was tied to the domain of Lucifer. The people then appealed to the forces of good, so that the light could return quickly.

From 1700, in the Scandinavian houses and villages the call of the light began to be made through processions that had Lucia, as the main figure. At present this date is still celebrated in many Scandinavian homes, mostly in Sweden. The wife or the eldest daughter puts a set of five or seven lighted candles on her head (nowadays there are already battery garlands for the purpose), wearing a long white robe. She is the bearer of light, of good, of positive forces. Usually she is accompanied by a small retinue of young people, also they dressed in white robes and wearing garlands on their heads.

Even in London, Princess Madeleine of Sweden did not want to pass on such Swedish tradition aside, and took her eldest daughter, Princess Leonore, to an anticipated celebration for St. Lucia at the Swedish embassy in London. The princess shared the moment in her official Facebook.
